Jay Boogie
Jay got the nickname of “Boogie” during a pro-am tournament game after college. His defender was overly aggressive (grabbing, holding and trying to frustrate him). So Jay began to turn the tables on him by showing off his ballhandling skills and flat out embarassed his defender. The crowd loved it! The announcer said he was “boogieing on down”. The following games people called him “Jay Boogieing On Down”. That name stayed until the MC at a Venice Beach tournament called him “Jay Boogie”.
Origin of The Hooptainers
Ryan Hicks, son of Ken Hicks (the Godfather of the Venice Ball tournament), and Jay were two players on a team from Los Angeles that played against a Pasadena crew every Sunday. The team from Pasadena consisted of Bone Collector and Spin Master.
Ryan introduced Jay to Ramall (No He Didn’t) during one of their Sunday games. The following weekend Ramall had brought his cousins, Jontae & Kenny, to help compete against the Pasadena crew. Immediately the four clicked. The final addition to the Hooptainers was Kris. At the time he was still in college, so he was not able to play regularly with the LA team on Sundays.
